FO Friday: Sweater!

You didn’t really think I had a person-sized sweater to show off, did you? No, the only sweaters I’m making progress on are wine bottle sweaters. Look at this super-cute baseball version:

img_6335That’s a gift for a very good friend who’s a huge Kansas City Royals fan, and I’ve got more of those buttons so I’ll probably make more. Maybe I can sell a few next year! I’ve also got another red one finished and a green one on the needles. I decided the mother and one of the SILs each need one. Why I couldn’t decide this a month ago, I have no idea, but there you have it. This is the Christmas tradition: declare I’m not making a lot of Christmas gifts, then decide at the last minute that I want to make Christmas gifts for so many people. And that, friends, is why we all declare January selfish-knitting month!

Hope you all are having a happy holiday season so far!

A Sea Chanty of Sorts

Because the holidays aren’t busy enough, I recently agreed to test knit a cowl pattern for Lindalou Anne Holley, and I’m happy to report that the pattern is live now! It’s called A Sea Chanty of Sorts, and it’s a one-skein pattern for either fingering or DK weight, and there are small and large versions of both. I chose to knit the larger DK version so I could knit up my gorgeous Big Sky Yarn Co. Squish DK, in the color Big Sky.

img_8657

The diamond pattern is made with a slipped stitch/cable motif. Maybe my yarn was slippery, but I did have to use a locking stitch marker to hold the loose stitch so it didn’t get dropped. But it was an easy pattern to follow, and I love the finished piece.

img_8645I went down two needle sizes to get closer to the pattern gauge, and I used all but eight grams of my yarn, so I would recommend checking gauge if you’re making the larger DK version just to make sure you have enough yarn on hand. Normally I don’t for cowls; I just make sure I like how it’s knitting up.

It really was a perfect combo of yarn and pattern — they complement each other well and neither one overwhelms the other. This would make a perfect gift if I knew someone who loves blue, but I guess I’ll just keep it for myself!

Sock It To Me Monday

Yesterday I showed you my new sock yarn, now I’ll show you my new sock WIP! I actually started this one on Saturday when I had a bit of time in the car going from one shindig to another. It was so much fun that I kept knitting that night while I watched Gone With the Wind, a movie that changes for me each time I watch it. There are things about it that make me cringe now, but there are also parts that make me laugh and parts that break my heart. Anyway! Where was I? Oh yes, sock.

fullsizeoutput_2506I have given up hope of having them done by Christmas but that’s okay. I’ll probably set them aside and then I can have a brand new pair of socks next year!

My Pennyroyal hat is done and blocked and even has the pompom sewn on, after a minor hiccup. This is one of those poms that has a snap, so you can switch out colors, and somehow I always sew the base on upside down. Spoiler: it doesn’t work that way. But it was easily remedied and I have a lovely hat for the boy’s girlfriend.

IMG_6340

The other skein of yellow is on the needles to make a second hat, this one for the girl. She might end up with a matching yellow pompom, though, since I didn’t buy a fancy furry one for her!

New Yarn

Because of course I needed new yarn. (That’s sarcasm, friends, but it’s gentle and non-judgmental.) I decided I wanted to make a hat for the boy’s girlfriend, and her favorite color is yellow. Because yellow is my least favorite color, I had zero yellow yarn in my otherwise generous yarn stash. Oops, darn, I needed to go yarn shopping! And of course I want to support local independent businesses, so during Friday’s lunch break I zipped out to Yarn Social. The first trouble came because I got there too early, so I had to visit the antique store across the street where I found this beautiful polar bear.

IMG_6316I didn’t care what brand he was or how old he is, I just thought he was beautiful and needed to come home with me. Here’s the best part: I pulled out my debit card to pay, and the older gentleman said they only take cash or checks. But even as I was putting my card away and starting to say, “oh never mind then”, he kept wrapping the bear and said, “Just mail me a check.” He waved off my business card and just took my first name and phone number, and gave me a slip with the name and mailing address. I couldn’t thank him enough, and I was just so delighted to find a bit of old-fashioned kindness and trust. Made my whole day, I swear, and made that little bear even more special to me.

Anyway, after that I went to the yarn store, and debated between all the yellows before deciding on Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted in Spun Gold. (The boy weighed in via text so I wasn’t flying blind.) The girl working there helped me pick the best neutral pompom (though we really wanted to go with turquoise).

IMG_6321I cast on that night after picking the pattern Pennyroyal, and actually cast off the next morning and got it in a bath right away. I feel like the yarn grew a bit with washing, but I’m hoping it’ll still fit all right, maybe just a bit more slouchy than I expected. It took less yarn than I expected too, so I’ve got an entire skein left over that’s wound and everything. Guess I better make a second hat for someone!

But that wasn’t all I bought. Of course it wasn’t; did you think I could be that good, even if it is right before Christmas? No, I couldn’t, because I’ve been wanting Christmas socks and there at the counter was a bag of Christmas sock yarn plus a sample sock. I was only going to buy the one patterned skein on the right and the solid red, but then that girl (who is very good at her job) showed me the sock she was knitting with the other patterned skein and it was delightful so I just bought all three and I can’t wait to make Christmas socks!

fullsizeoutput_24e2I bet I can get a pair made before Christmas Eve…if I don’t work on any other knitting between now and then…so at least I’ll have Christmas socks for next year!

Right on schedule

Here it is, about a week after my last post! So apparently I have a schedule, it’s just not that frequent. But I have finished things to share today. First up are are my gift socks and they’re not exactly the same size but neither are feet, right? So we’re calling them a win. Yarn is Treasure Goddess Yarns Treasured Toes in Everglades Excursion and as nice as it was to knit with, I think the socks are going to feel awesome to wear. At least I hope so!

IMG_6324I also finally finished and blocked and photographed my Diamond Cowl. Once I committed to it, this was a fast and easy pattern, and I just love a diamond lace pattern. The yarn is Ella Rae Lace Merino Aran and it was quite scrumptious. It’s soft and smooth and has a lovely drape. I even had enough yarn to do an extra half-repeat of the lace pattern.

I have more FO’s, if you can believe it, but they’re still in the blocking/photography phases, and plus I don’t want to throw it all in at once. Maybe I’ll manage to get another post out sooner than a week!

I’m excited about knitting right now, which feels good. I’m even still excited about a couple of potential gifts I want to make, if I have time. We’re on track with gift shopping, though we haven’t started wrapping yet, and overall I’m feeling pretty good about Christmas being so close. But it’s also Saturday morning, when I’m happiest and most optimistic because the whole weekend is stretching before me, so we’ll see how I feel in a week or so. Happy weekend, friends!

FO: Gift Socks

How do you other people manage to write posts every day, or every other day? Here I am, lucky to get one a week out. I think about it more often, I even have post ideas more often, but to have the time and energy to get the words out? Well. This is what I can manage right now and that’s all there is to it. I have been experiencing spurts of Christmas spirit and that’s quite fun. In fact, I might even wrap some presents today!

Yes, I do have most of my Christmas shopping done, except for a few teenagers who haven’t shared any ideas (the girl being one of them!!). The husband woke up sick this morning so he’s in bed and I’ll be on dinner duty tonight. It’s fine, we’ll just have meatloaf instead of his homemade turkey noodle soup. (I’m crying on the inside, but we’ll have the soup another day. I’ll survive.)

I finished a pair of gift socks on Friday. These are for my work gift exchange, the worsted weight house socks, and they might not be exactly the same size, but they’re pretty darn close and once they get out of their bath, I should be able to pat them into the same size.

img_6274The pattern is Arinn and they’re very simple, would be a great first sock pattern. I really like the rib pattern and how it flows down the foot. Yarn is Berroco Vintage, perfect for gifts because it’s machine washable.

Yesterday I spent my knitting time on my Color Me Happy cowl, which has been in hibernation while I focused on gift knitting. It’s HUGE, and I still have about ten rows of purple and then another section of two colors striped together. I’m loving these little eyelet bits in the purple. They’ll block out so nicely!

I’ll probably work on this again today and go back to gift knitting tomorrow. I’ve got one more gift sock to finish and I’d like to make the mother a wine sweater too, just for fun.

IMG_4913We went to a pop-up Christmas bar as part of our work holiday party, and I loved it so much! (Oh and I also gifted the cactus, along with some prickly pear tea, and I think it was a hit!) So, cheers to you — I hope you’re having a lovely winter holiday season so far!

That’s it, then

When I came home from work Tuesday night, I thought having the next five days off sounded like such a long time. But now I’m in the last day and guess what, it was not that long! The dinners are done, the girl is gone, and I go back to work tomorrow, alas. But all is not lost because it is December, the Christmas decorations are up, the girl will be back for winter break in about two weeks, and I still have the rest of the day to knit! The temptation to start something new for me is strong, but I will probably be good and work on my gift socks. I’ve got two pairs in the works.

img_6208The left is Treasure Goddess sock yarn, and the right is Berroco Vintage worsted. It’s for a work gift exchange. They chose a sock theme and of course I had to make socks! But I don’t have time to make actual sock-weight socks, so I’m doing a nice cozy bed sock or house sock or whatever you want to call it. I finished the first one in about four days — I’d forgotten how quickly worsted weight socks knit up! The pattern for that one is Arinn and it’s a simple rib. I also finished a cowl but it’s a test knit so I’m going to save that one for when the pattern is live and I have some prettier photos.

Oh, but I also need to make another Santa hat! Guess I better get to knitting!

Black Friday Treasures

Yes, I did go shopping on Black Friday, but not in the mainstream crazy way. Instead we made our annual jaunt to Weston, Missouri, a small town with charming little shops and Father Christmas. The MIL went with us, as did the boy’s girlfriend (shh, I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about that or not!) so we had a big jolly group. We met dogs and bought things and had fudge and hot chocolate and it was a lovely day.

IMG_0408

(Just to clarify, that’s the girl in the photo here, not the girlfriend. I don’t think the girlfriend is at the blogging stage yet.) I found yarn plus a beautiful dip pen from the 1880s with a gold nib and a mother of pearl body. I don’t know that I’ll ever actually write with it but I love having a bit of pen history in my collection.

Tonight we’re hosting the mother and the sister for a small Thanksgiving, Part II before the girl has to go back to college tomorrow. I don’t really cook so I’ll be doing a bit of cleaning, plus the laundry I’ve been neglecting, and then I’ll do some knitting.

dfafe083-8358-4ad0-aa62-84283a7a4c2fThis is the KnitPicks Santa Hat, a free pattern, and I even used the recommended yarn! It came out a tad smaller than I wanted, so I think I need to make a second one.

Happy Holidays, friends!

Spring Rain

It’s a holiday week and my girl is home and I think I might take the day off tomorrow to decorate and be home with my kids and it feels really good to have a happy head space! Plus, I have a beautiful new shawl to share with you!

fullsizeoutput_2488

This is Spring Rain, which I started a couple of months ago. I had a little hiccup in the middle of the last lace section but it recovered nicely and I think it’s gorgeous. And I learned that putting stitch markers between lace repeats is extremely helpful!

The green is Madelinetosh Twist Light in Seaglass and it’s even more stunning in person. It’s vivid and saturated and a little darker than in these photos. I don’t even wear a lot of green but I love this color so much. The other yarn I got from a mystery destash and I have no idea what brand it is, but it coordinated perfectly with the Seaglass!

IMG_8613

Happy Tuesday, friends — hope the Thanksgiving planning is going smoothly for you!

Cactus is NOT done

He really was done, and very cute. And then last night I went to a book signing and the boy forgot I wasn’t going to be home so he didn’t lock up the dogs when he went to band practice. (You can see where this is going, can’t you?)

img_6110

Yes, alas, Duncan strikes again. The silver lining is that it’s just the one piece that’s damaged, and it’s even the smallest piece. I should be able to remove that, attach a new one, and even save the flower. I guess that will be added to my weekend knitting! Sigh. Dogs. Can’t live with them, can’t live without them!
