We are four days into the new month and I’m making good progress on two new WIPs. I had to cast on a new sock of course, and I cast on for the Blogville Water shawl KAL. Last night I made it to the end of the first garter stitch section and I’m ready for the first short row section. Before I dive into that, though, I need to make sure I know how to do the special stitches. Hopefully I can get into that tonight!

But I also have new things on deck! With warmer temperatures arriving, I’m discovering that shortie socks are my favorites for spring, and I only have four pairs. That’s not nearly enough, so I dipped into my bag of leftovers for a couple of little balls and I’ll cast these on later today. The rainbow yarn is my happy mail from today and my first yarn from Desert Vista Dyeworks! It’s Rainbows Run the World with colors inspired by all the women we saw on Inauguration Day. Why do I have two skeins? I don’t know, I just loved it so much I wanted enough! I know one skein will be socks, maybe the other will become a cool cowl or something.

What’s your favorite non-sock thing to make with self-striping sock yarn?
Honestly, I don’t make many non-sock things with self striping yarn. I enjoy making shawls out of gradients, but that’s the closest I’ve gotten to self-striping shawls. I think I’d worry that the stripes would look weird as the shawl grew. A cowl or scarf, though, where the row length stays the same, might be a good option!
I love the yarn on your new sock! Such a cool color combination.
I don’t either! I’m with you–I don’t think a shawl would work that well, but a cowl would be pretty awesome.
I’ve used self-striping yarn for blanket squares before, and that can be fun if the square is big enough that the stripes show up. (Mine was a 8″ double-knit square, so it looked cool.)
That would be really cool too!
Can I be honest? I don’t think I have ever knit with self-striping sock yarn. I KNOW!!!!
WHAAATTT?? It’s magical!! I hope you try it some day!
I want to, and I definitely will. I just feel funny buying yarn when I have so much. Maybe just one skein won’t hurt.
I would love to knit something other than socks with self striping yarn. A hat would work. Fingerless mitts would be awesome!
I keep telling myself I need to make striping mitts!!
You are making great progress with your sock and shawl! I haven’t made any of them yet, but I know Biscotte & Cie has some nifty cowls and shawls to make with self-striping yarn. Also Xandy Peters just recently did a nifty cowl – the Puddle Jumping cowl (I had to look it up) that is specifically for self-striping yarn.
OMG that Puddle Jumping cowl is SO COOL!! I’m gonna have to make a note of that one! Thank you!
Right? It seemed like something you would like 🙂
