A while back, maybe a year or so ago, I bought four skeins of navy blue fingering weight yarn to make a Doctor Who shawl. I ended up not liking the pattern so I gave up and frogged it. Recently I thought it would be nice to use that navy blue for a sweater, so I cast on a simple pullover. After a month, this is what I had:
It was knitting up nicely, was very soft … and VERY boring. I had zero motivation to work on it. That got frogged this morning and now I’m trying to figure out if I can do another sweater where I hold a solid with a variegated, and use up four variegated skeins along with the navy. Fortunately, both purple and pink look marvelous with navy, but I’m not sure I’ve got enough coordinating skeins to make it work.
The one on the left is amazing and I love it, but I only have two skeins of the pink sparkle yarn, that dyer has gone out of business, and I can’t find anyone selling any remaining skeins. Only 800 yards of that probably would not make a sweater that would fit me! So the skeins on the right are the more likely option, and I love 3 of the 4. But that one on the far right just sticks out to me, and I don’t know how well it would knit up with the others, even if I did alternating skeins. What do you think?

I agree that the far right stands out a little more because it has teal in it. But I wonder if that differencde would not matter as much if you’re holding them with the navy. You could also stripe the first three with the navy and that would be really cool. Like Navy, A, Navy, B, Navy, C.
The only downside to stripes is that I’m not holding the yarn double to make the knitting go faster, haha! For now it’s on the back burner while I ponder.
I like Kath’s idea that you do stripes…or brave it and do your first colourwork jumper…or slip stitch pattern which would be a little easier.
Colorwork would definitely be stunning but I’m just not there yet! Slip stitch could be fun!
I’m wondering if a pattern like Party Cardy might work where you do the waist hem, cuffs, and buttonband in the solid color then maybe stripe the solid with the sparkle if needed.

I’m not a big stripe fan so I’d probably sit on this project for a while longer and see if I could find a solo skein that blends more happily with any four you like.

I don’t know if it would be enough extra interest for you, but my personal decision (if I was the one knitting it up) would be to use the color option on the left and do a colorwork yoke sweater. Maybe one with colorwork again around the hem & cuffs if there was enough yarn. However, that would still give you the bulk of the body as just navy yarn, which didn’t interest you enough initially, so that might not work well.
Oh I love that you think I could do a colorwork sweater! 🙂 I attempted colorwork a few years ago and it was so terrible that I’ve never tried again. I’ll get there someday! It would work really well with this yarn combo for sure!
LOL, oh, sorry! I’ve been planning a colorwork yoke sweater for some time now (but I don’t think I have the yarn to knit it in my stash, which is why I haven’t done it yet) and so that design style is on the brain lately. 🙂

Yes! I think that’s what’s tripping me up — I really want to use the navy with that pink, so I need to figure out what to knit!
